Two numbers, honestly kept
Purchase value is a fact you can source from a receipt. Current value is an estimate. Keeping them separate keeps the record credible.
Revisit current values occasionally on the items where it matters — electronics depreciate, some collectibles do not.

Analytics show where value sits: which room, which category, which storage unit. It is a fast way to spot that the garage holds more value than the insurance conversation assumed.
